The Beginning

Every epic journey must have a beginning, especially the ones that go to places that have never been seen before by humankind.
You know, the kind of places that require you to be either totally naive, out of your mind, or extremely driven to take on insane challenges.
This is one of those places, a gateway to another world that lies beneath our feet. And yes, there go our heroes, the brave souls that just cannot let this kind of
opportunity pass.
Hope and determination shine in their eyes as they progress, their palms barely scatched in this first step of their adventure. They are just deep enough to miss
the cold wind that has begun to blow, spreading the mists over the land above them. They do pause, when the rumble of the threatening volcano refuses to be
ignored by their excitement.
But, neither will say no at this point.
Welcome to The Beginning.

This was a really great image to work on. I did not have any sort of plan for it when I began, I just randomly started pulling out pictures from my library to use.
My primary goal was to illustrate a landscape for my middle son’s book he is writing, but it would just not go in the direction that I (or he)had hoped for.
This image is a composite of approximately 20 images, and several illustrations that I drew into it. When I was done with putting it all together the file size was
over 2 GB. It was enormous! Thankfully, I was able to keep my computer chugging along and not crashing dealing with an image that size in Photoshop. I am very
excited about how it turned out, and I cannot wait to see where the story leads these two next! Which is a good thing because I just injured my ankle, and I am
grounded for a bit and I have plenty of time to ponder on this. 🙂 If you would like to see this image in a much bigger resolution- please go to my gallery website-

Here are the images that I used to create this image.

I hope that you enjoy this as much as I do.
Creatively yours,

  1. This is such a fabulous idea. I can see things in my mind but could never capture it in pictures so surreal, either through artwork and, obviously not photography. The idea of composite images to create what I see inside and to write from that is exciting. Is this a difficult thing to do? Specialist skills as well as programmes?
It reminds me of cover art from albums of certain bands. What you describe from what you have created is stunning. I need to look into this. So innovative.
I’m looking at the composition above again and can feel it inside. Quite extraordinary.

    • I have been a writer for many years but got a little side tracked raising three boys and working full time. Over the years I became a photographer and digital and conceptual artist. I have a lot of training in those areas with a specialty in Photoshop and lightroom. My career goals with my art are to design book covers, and to sell my prints. If you want to see more of my work my portfolio website is at http://www.fierytailimagery.smugmug.com it will give you a better idea of what I do. I am really happy that you enjoyed my work, your kind words really made my day, thank-you friend!!

      • I’m having a little difficulty accessing that site. I clicked to find out more about your work but the header is blocking all but half an inch or so of the screen. It may just be on my kindle as it’s not the most user friendly for all sites. I’ll be sure to look in again when I’m on my laptop. I was able to view more of your pictures and they are stunning. The ones of the eagle fill me. I love eagles.
I need to follow here and find out what other treasures you have. I admire this skill so much, probably even moreso because I have none in this area. I love to look at beautiful pictures and these are among the best and most imaginative I’ve seen.
The best of luck to you in finding avenues to showcase these. Seriously impressed.

  2. Thank-you so much for taking the time to look at my work. I love creating these pieces. There is so much photography out there, I wanted to show images of things that had never been photographed before, and this is where that desire led me 🙂 plus telling the story behind them is fun. Again, thank-you so much for your kind words, you are very sweet! I look forward to reading your blog, and to hearing from you again.
